South Suburban Parks and Recreation

A Little Bit About Us

South Suburban Park and Recreation District’s (SSPRD) mission is to foster healthy living through stewardship of the environment, parks, trails, and open space, and by providing recreational services and programs. SSPRD provides the recreation services to the Sheridan community, as well as five other cities, through the recreation center, pools, trails and more.

South Platte Park seeks to help our community find meaning and value in natural open spaces through positive, hands-on experiences. The park is 880-acres of lakes, meadows, and trails that stretch along 2.5 miles of the South Platte River in nearby Littleton. Our Nature Center and park naturalists lead a wide variety of programs throughout the community to guide people in building confidence for safe outdoor adventures with nature.

South Platte Park offers a variety of programs to students at Sheridan schools, as well as daycamps and family programs in the Sheridan community, and at the Park itself, for all ages from preschoolers to school-agers to adults and seniors.

Most Sheridan Inspire program costs are paid by the Generation Wild grant but South Platte Park also offers scholarships for most programs that are NOT part of the Inspire initiative. Visit www.ssprd.org/scholarships for details.

FIELD TRIPS

South Platte Park is providing nature tour experiences for all 1st, 3rd, and 5th grade classrooms in Sheridan Schools. Students spend a day exploring the trails or wading in the river to capture and study plants and animals in programs linked to the school curriculum. The Park is also working with 6th grade teachers for an investigation-based science series.
